Antoine, Ralph?' he asked.

'I met the man called de Renneville,' I replied. 'You know him?'

Maurepas smiled sourly.

'I have heard of him.'

'Well,' I continued, 'according to him the prisoner was closely guarded in the Bastille, his face was masked, he was kept under close custody all the time and

'And what else?' Maurepas asked quickly. 'We know all that.'

'The masked man was a prince.'

The room fell quiet. I heard a clock chime out in the hallway and the faint sound of a cart clattering on the cobbles outside. Again I thought of Villon and Fleury and I wondered if the man who had been following me was still out there lurking in the shadows.

'You are sure about that?' D'Estivet quickly asked.

I repeated de Renneville's words and they heard me out.

'Hell's teeth!' Maurepas muttered. 'But that does not match what we have learned.' He put his hand inside his doublet and drew out a small roll of yellow parchment. 'We have found the masked man's name.' He looked at me and blinked, disappointment written all over his face. 'His name,' he continued wearily, 'was Eustace D'Auger.'

'You may remember,' D'Estivet interrupted, 'how you went through the index of royal letters which gave us a summary of each d« ument or warrant about the masked man. You found his name had been erased except for the first letter "E". Monsieur Maurepas,' he continued smugly, 'discovered the original letters. The names had been removed from there but then we found the drafts written in Louis XIV's own hand or that of his Minister of War. Here, the name is quite clear, it is Eustace D'Auger.'
